Meet Cal-GETC: Your Streamlined Pathway to CSU and UC Transfer

Starting in Fall 2025, a new general education (GE) pattern called the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (or Cal-GETC) will replace the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) and California State University General Education (CSU GE) Breadth for students transferring to CSU or UC. This new pathway is designed to simplify the transfer process and make sure your GE courses count.
Why Does Cal-GETC Matter?
- One clear pathway – No more separate GE patterns! Cal-GETC works for both CSU and UC transfers.
- Easier transfers – Completing Cal-GETC ensures your GE credits transfer smoothly to CSU and UC, helping you stay on track.
- New Ethnic Studies requirement – Learn about diverse cultures and gain skills for today's workforce.
- More course options – Community colleges will offer a variety of classes that fulfill Cal-GETC, giving you flexibility in your academic plan.
- Same requirements statewide – No matter which California community college you attend, you'll follow the same Cal-GETC framework.
What If I'm Already Following IGETC or CSU GE?
Transfers Before Fall 2025
If you are currently following IGETC or CSU GE and plan to transfer before Fall 2025:
- Keep following IGETC (for UC transfer) or CSU GE Breadth (for CSU transfer) as planned. Cal-GETC doesn't apply to you!
Transfers During or After Fall 2025
If you are currently following IGETC or CSU GE and plan to transfer during or after Fall 2025:
- If you are currently following IGETC or CSU GE Breadth, talk to a counselor to see if switching to Cal-GETC is best for you.
- CSU GE Breadth will still be available for CSU transfers only (not UC).
- CSU and UC will no longer accept new IGETC certifications starting in Fall 2025.
Next Steps for Students
Until all our Cal-GETC courses are approved and published on our website (we anticipate they will be complete by the end of September 2025) and on ASSIST.org, students should meet with a counselor to get personalized advice on the best GE plan. Watch for updates from American River College about Cal-GETC, including workshops and additional resources.
