English and Math Placement

Students who graduated from a US high school and included all of the requested high school information on their CCCApply application will be automatically placed in English and math courses upon admission to American River College.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Placement

If you are still learning English, you can complete the ESL Guided Self-Placement Process online, which will place you in ESL classes that match your skill level. Your placements will immediately appear on the screen when you complete the process. Allow 24 hours for those placements to post to your eServices account. See the ESL Placement page for additional information.

How to Access Your Placements

To view your placements online:

Placement for Dual Enrollment Students

As part of the Dual Enrollment (Special Admit) approval process, you may submit your current unofficial high school transcript with your Special Admit Form if you plan to enroll in a math class, English class, or a class which has an English or math prerequisite for placement at the time of admission.

If you did not receive a placement, or if you completed additional high school coursework in English or math after receiving a placement, you may submit a Placement Re-Evaluation Request Form to have new placements determined.

Updating or Receiving English and Math Placements

Provide High School Information

If you graduated from a US high school, but you did not report your high school information on your application, or your high school information was not correct on your application, you can submit a Placement Re-Evaluation Request Form to receive or update your English and math course placements.

Use College Coursework or Credit for Prior Learning To Satisfy Prerequisites

Aside from placements, you may also be able to satisfy English, Math, or ESL prerequisites using outside coursework or certain test results, such as Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or College-Level Examination Program (CLEP).  Please see Prerequisite Verification and Challenge for more information.
