Frequently-asked questions about apprenticeship training at ARC for union trades.
All Union trades are each taught at one of the Union’s Training Centers depending on your trade and location. American River College does not provide any instruction.
Apprenticeships usually last 4-5 years. Usually every 6 months you can qualify for pay increases as you meet your requirements and complete 1-2 classes and a minimum number of hours.
When you’re done, you’ll have all your coursework complete, and along the way you’ll have been paid a solid wage from day one.
As an apprentice, your Union training is free and fully covered as part of your union dues. All college credits earned through American River College are paid for by the state. Once you’re in a training program, you’re guaranteed a place in every class.
In the trades, everybody is welcome. You just need to come with a good attitude, a commitment to doing the job right, and a willingness to learn. The trades are already a diverse group of people from all backgrounds, but they also take pride in celebrating their growing ranks of women and veterans in the trades.
Most training programs only require a high school diploma or equivalent G.E.D. and don’t require prior experience. Some programs may have an aptitude test and require some basic understanding of algebra.
If a union training center has a waitlist, often students will first take vocational courses at the community college or complete general education coursework while they wait. This gives them the chance to _______.
You won’t need to worry about applying to American River College in the beginning. The union training center will help you with the process of enrolling.
Of course, if you have any questions about enrollment, or you want to take advantage of our college services, you can reach out to your ARC homebase advisor anytime during your apprenticeship.
General Education courses are not a requirement to earn college credit in your apprenticeship training. You can enroll in an apprenticeship to earn a certificate, or you can apply for these credits.
Not only can you earn an Associate’s Degree in your area of Apprenticeship, but you can also apply many of your college credits towards other certificates or degrees later on.
