CHEM 400 Assessment Test

The CHEM 400 assessment test is administered by the Chemistry department at no charge and no sign-up is required.

Applicability

  • All prerequisites listed in the college catalog apply to all CHEM 400 students. No exceptions will be made.
    • Students who have NOT passed CHEM 310 and are who planning on enrolling in CHEM 400 must show proof of a passing score on the Chemistry Assessment Test or they will not be eligible to remain enrolled in CHEM 400.
    • The above applies to all students who have not passed CHEM 310 specifically.
    • Only students who have passed CHEM 310 are exempt from the chemistry assessment test.
  • The chemistry department strongly suggests that students enroll in CHEM 310 before attempting CHEM 400.

CHEM 400 Assessment Appointment Information

  • Sign up: You must sign up for the Chemistry Assessment by submitting the confirmation form at the bottom of this page to access the scheduling page. You will receive an email confirmation with information about your session after you schedule your appointment.
  • Location: Chemistry Assessment will be held in the room indicated when you sign up and listed on your confirmation email. Plan to arrive 5 to 10 minutes before your scheduled time. If you arrive late, you will have to reschedule assuming additional sessions are available. There is no option for an online assessment.
  • Duration: Allow up to 1.5 hours to complete Chemistry Assessment process.
  • Proctored by: Chemistry Assessment sessions are led by chemistry faculty.
  • Accessibility accommodations: If you feel like you have a disability or have a verified disability and need accommodations for the chemistry assessment, contact the Disability Services and Programs for Students (DSPS) Office before you make an appointment for chemistry assessment:  If you have an accommodation on file and choose to assess without accommodations, you will not be given an extra assessment attempt with accommodations. Please choose carefully whether to assess with or without your accommodations.

Fall 2025 Chemistry Assessment Sessions

The dates and times below may or may not still be available. Please select the schedule chemistry assessment button at the bottom of the page to make an appointment. Please note that only one attempt is allowed for the Chemistry Assessment Test. The following assessment sessions are for the fall 2025 semester. There is a maximum of 24 students per exam date so do not wait until the last second to schedule your session. While 45 minutes is allowed for the exam itself, the entire session could take up to 1.5 hours.

Assessment Results

  • Assessment result sheets will be distributed by the proctor within 5-10 minutes of the assessments session’s end.
  • You must be present to receive your score.
  • Assessment scores will NOT be available through eServices.

Invalid Attempts and Reassessment

During your assessment test, you are not allowed to get help from notes, cell phones, smart devices, websites, or people. Students who get unauthorized help will not receive placement results and will not be eligible to reassess.

A student may complete the Chemistry Assessment process at American River College only one time. Additional attempts will not be scored.

Chemistry Department will provide:

  • Exam
  • Multiple choice response sheet
  • Calculator (students are required to use the provided calculator)

How to Prepare

Students should:

  • Be available for up to 1.5 hours to complete the assessment process.
  • Bring a valid photo ID (school or government-issued), such as:
    • Driver's license
    • High school ID card
    • College ID card
    • State or federal ID card
    • Passport
    • Tribal ID card
    • Green card
    • Naturalization card or certificate of citizenship
