ESL Assessment Appointment Information
- Sign up: Submit the confirmation form at the bottom of this page to access the scheduling page. You can sign up for ESL Assessment sessions three weeks in advance. You will receive an email confirmation with information about your session after you schedule your appointment.
- Location: ESL Assessments are held in the Learning Resource Center. Plan to arrive 20 to 30 minutes before your scheduled time. If you arrive late, you will have to reschedule.
- Duration: Allow up to two hours to complete ESL Assessment.
- Proctored by: ESL Assessment sessions are led by ESL faculty.
- Accessibility accommodations: If you feel like you have a disability or have a verified disability and need accommodations for English as a Second Language (ESL) assessment, email the Disability Services and Programs for Students (DSPS) Office at dsps@arc.losrios.edu before you schedule an ESL assessment. If you have an accommodation on file and choose to assess without accommodations, you may not be given an extra assessment attempt with accommodations in a timely manner.

Assessment Results
- Assessment results will be emailed to your ARC email address within ten business days. Learn how to access your ARC email and how to find and send email messages from the ARC Homepage.
- Assessment results will also be available in eServices in one additional day. Learn how to find ESL placements in eServices.
Invalid Attempts and Reassessment
During your assessment test, you are not allowed to get English language help from a dictionary, cell phone, smart device, website, or person. Students who get unauthorized English language help will not receive placement results and will have to wait 30 calendar days to reassess.
A student may complete the ESL Assessment process at American River College one additional time, after a 30-calendar-day waiting period from their first assessment.
How to Prepare
Students should:
- Be available for up to 2 hours to complete the assessment process.
- Bring a valid photo ID (school or government-issued), such as:
- Driver's license
- High school ID card
- College ID card
- State or federal ID card
- Passport
- Tribal ID card
- Green card
- Naturalization card or certificate of citizenship
