Overview
English at ARC is made up of five distinct and overlapping programs. We provide access to in-person, online, and hybrid instruction in creative writing, literature, education, reading, and writing courses. These courses will provide you with unique and meaningful ways to develop the skills that will help you meet your education and personal goals.
We serve students at ARC’s main campus, the Natomas Educational Center, the McClellan Center, and via distance education through our expanding and high-quality online courses.
The ENGWR program, the largest in the unit, makes up two of the so-called “golden four” courses for transfer and graduation: composition and critical thinking. Our transfer-level composition courses will help you meet graduation, certificate, AA/AS, and transfer requirements; the writing, reading, and critical thinking skills developed and refined in those courses will also enable you to achieve your academic and career goals.
Our second largest program, literature, offers courses that will help develop and refine many of those same skills as our writing courses but with an additional focus on historical, cultural, and psychological analysis from a literary perspective. Students use these courses to meet General Education transfer and graduation requirements in Humanities as well as for personal enrichment and the development of cross-cultural and interpersonal empathy.
The courses that make up our creative writing program offer the opportunity to hone your writing for publication and for self-expression, often including members of the community or direct outreach to the community in the form of readings and publishing. As with the composition and literature courses, these courses help fulfill graduation and transfer requirements.
Our support programs, Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) and Reading Across Disciplines (RAD), play an important role in providing additional one-on-one and small-group instruction in reading and writing along with study skills. WAC and RAD also serve the broader college campus by providing support in all disciplines from career tech to general education.
Finally, if your goal is to become a K-12 educator, our ENGED classes develop the focused tools used to teach reading and writing, including field experience opportunities.
Over the last several years, all the programs in the English unit, from writing to education, have done extensive work to become race-conscious and develop culturally responsive and culturally relevant practices and pedagogies. We have participated in and developed equity research and training focused on assessments, course material, and positive faculty, staff, and student dynamics. Since equity is a process not a product, we continue to create and revise courses and programs where students can see themselves, understand the lives of others, and develop the skills to reach their personal, academic, and career goals.
How to Register for ENGWR 94
This information is designed to help students who assessed into English Writing (ENGWR) 94, Succeeding in College Composition, register for the right corequisite courses.
In addition to registering for ENGWR 94, students must also register for the corresponding section of ENGL C1000 (College Composition) that is listed in the online Schedule of Classes.
ENGL C1000 meets AA/AS graduation requirements and is transferable to a four-year college.
How to Register for ENGWR 94:
- Both ENGWR 94 and the corresponding section of ENGL C1000 must be in a student’s shopping cart at the time of registration.

Associate Degree for Transfer
A.A.-T. in English
The Associate in Arts in English for Transfer (AA-T) provides students with a major that fulfills the general requirements of a California State University. Students with this degree will receive priority admission with junior status to the California State University system. All students should work closely with their American River College counselor to ensure that they are taking the appropriate coursework to prepare for majoring in English at the institution they wish to transfer to because major and general education requirements may vary for each CSU and the degree may only transfer to specific institutions.
Students must complete the following Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) requirements (pursuant to SB1440, §66746):
• 60 semester or 90 quarter CSU-transferable units
• the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) pattern
• a minimum of 18 semester or 27 quarter units in the major or area of emphasis as determined by the community college district
• obtain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0
All ADTs also require that students must earn a “C” or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis. A "P" (Pass) grade is also an acceptable grade for courses in the major if the course is taken on a Pass/No Pass basis.

This course offers study of literary texts, with emphasis on analytical reading and writing. It covers principles of argument and analysis, such as reasoning inductively and deductively. This course is an advanced seminar in critical reading and writing about literature. Focused on complex, in-depth reading assignments, it develops the analytic skills needed to examine fiction, poetry, and drama, expanding on those covered in a traditional ENGL 301 course. The course includes culturally responsive texts representing diverse perspectives and cultures. It covers inductive and deductive reasoning about literature and the written analysis of literature, requiring at least 6,500 words of formal, analytical writing. The course emphasizes workshop, collaboration, and reflection on the writer’s process. In this course, students receive instruction in critical thinking for purposes of constructing,
evaluating, and composing arguments in a variety of rhetorical forms, using primarily non-fiction
texts, refining writing skills and research strategies developed in ENGL C1000 Academic Reading and
Writing (C-ID ENGL 100) or similar first-year college writing course. Students examine methods by which people are persuaded to think, believe, and/or act by exploring the relationship between language and logic. Students also identify cognitive biases and common fallacies of language and thought in order to craft traditional and/or multimodal arguments in context of current social, economic, political, and environmental discourse. This course was formerly known as ENGWR 303 Argumentative Writing and Critical Thinking Through Literature.
In this course, students receive instruction in analytical, critical, and argumentative writing. Students develop critical thinking, close reading and literary analysis skills, research strategies, information literacy, and knowledge of accurate documentation through the study of diverse literary works from a variety of literary genres, developing an appreciation for literature. This course includes an introduction to literary theory and emphasizes the conscious inclusion of writers representing Black, African American, Latinx, Native American, Asian American and Pacific Islander, and LGBTQIA+ communities. This course was formerly known as ENGWR 303 and is not open to students who have successfully completed ENGWR 303. Students may satisfy the prerequisite for the course through successful completion of ENGL C1000/C1000H (formerly ENGWR 300/480) or ESLW 340.

This course was formerly known as ENGWR 480 Honors College Composition.
In this course, students receive instruction in academic reading and writing, including writing
processes, effective use of language, analytical thinking, and the foundations of academic research.
This is an honors course. This Honors writing course focuses on reading, writing, and critical thinking skills that extend past those developed in a traditional writing course. This rigorous course requires the analysis of complex short works along with at least one full-length volume of non-fiction. It emphasizes the writing of carefully reasoned, stylistically sophisticated essays, at least one of which includes research and appropriate documentation.
