The Learning Resource Center offers Embedded Tutoring to provide students with targeted consistent academic support within specific courses. Embedded tutors are assigned to designated classes and work closely with both instructors and students to enhance the learning experience.
What Is Embedded Tutoring?
Embedded tutoring places a tutor directly into a specific class to provide an ongoing course-aligned support. The embedded tutor becomes familiar with the course structure, assignments, and instructor expectations, allowing them to offer personalized tutoring to students in that class.
We currently provide embedded tutoring for selected transfer-level Math, Chemistry, and English courses.
In-Person vs. Online Embedded Tutoring
Embedded tutoring is offered for both in-person and online courses:
- In-Person Classes: The embedded tutor attends every class session alongside students. This helps the tutor understand the course material, the instructor’s teaching style, and student needs.
- Online Classes: The embedded tutor is added to the course in Canvas as a tutor, allowing them to access course materials and stay up to date with assignments, deadlines, and discussions.
How Can Students Access Embedded Tutors?
In addition to supporting their assigned class, embedded tutors also work in the Learning Resource Center during the week. Students from the embedded class can:
- Make a one-on-one appointment with the tutor during the tutor’s LRC hours.
- Attend drop-in sessions, if offered, based on instructor request and tutor availability.
These additional options give students more flexibility to get help outside of class time.
For Faculty Interested in Embedded Tutoring
Embedded tutoring is currently offered for transfer-level English, Math, and Chemistry courses.
The Learning Resource Center handles recruiting, hiring, and paying the embedded tutors, so faculty do not need to manage any of those logistics. However, we greatly value your input, and we are happy to prioritize students you recommend and would like to have as embedded tutors in your course.
If you are interested in having an embedded tutor support your class or would like more information, please reach out to:
